Car Lockout Service

Disclaimer: TowCars.com is a nationwide towing information and referral service. We don’t tow, dispatch, or store vehicles, and we aren’t responsible for the work, prices, or conduct of any towing company. If you send us a request, we pass it to independent providers who set their own prices and terms. See our disclosure.

A car lockout service gets you back into your vehicle when the keys are locked inside, the remote won’t open the doors, or a key fob has died. Roadside technicians use purpose-made tools to open the door without the key. They are not there to make a new key; if the key is lost or broken, you may need a locksmith or dealer instead.

When you need lockout service

  • The keys are visible inside and the doors are locked.
  • The keys are locked in the trunk.
  • A key fob battery died and the car won’t unlock (many fobs hide a physical key; check first).
  • A child or pet is locked inside. In that case, if there is any risk from heat or cold, call 911 right away.

Lockout vs. locksmith

Opening a car is different from replacing a key. If the key is lost, stolen, broken in the lock, or a transponder key needs programming, ask for an automotive locksmith or contact your dealer. When you send a request, say clearly whether you have the key and just can’t reach it, or don’t have a working key at all.

Smart keys, fobs and push-button starts

Many cars now lock themselves when the fob is inside or nearby under certain conditions, and some will not unlock if the fob battery is weak. Before you call, try the spare fob if someone can bring it, check whether the fob hides a mechanical key, and see whether your car maker’s app can unlock the doors remotely. If none of that works, tell the provider the exact model and year, because the method for opening the door varies, and some vehicles with advanced alarm systems need extra care to avoid triggering an immobilizer.

Proof of ownership

A reputable provider will ask you to show that the car is yours before or right after they open it, usually with a photo ID that matches the registration or title. If the registration is inside the car, they may open it and then check. Be wary of anyone who opens a car without asking any questions.

What affects the cost

Lockouts are usually priced as a single service call. The time of day, how far the provider travels, the car’s security system, and whether the key is in the trunk can all affect the price. Some insurance policies and roadside plans cover lockouts, so check before you pay. For how service calls are billed generally, see our tow truck cost guide and the line-item definitions in the towing terms glossary.

What to have ready

  • Your exact location.
  • Year, make and model.
  • Where the keys are (seat, ignition, trunk) and whether the car is running.
  • Photo ID and, if you have it on you, the registration or insurance card.

Safety tips

  • If a person or animal is inside and it is hot or cold, call 911 before anything else.
  • Avoid forcing the door, window or weatherstripping yourself; damage can cost more than the call.
  • If you are in an unsafe or poorly lit place, wait somewhere nearby that is safe and visible.
  • Confirm the company name of the technician who arrives matches the provider you agreed with.

Frequently asked questions

Can a lockout service damage my car?

Trained technicians use tools designed to open doors without damage, but no method is risk-free. Ask the provider about their method and their responsibility if something is damaged before work starts.

Can they make me a new key?

Lockout service opens the car; it does not cut or program keys. If your key is lost or broken, ask for an automotive locksmith or contact your dealer.

What if my keys are locked in the trunk?

Some cars allow trunk access from the cabin once a door is open, and some don’t. Mention it in your request so the provider can plan for it.

Do I need to prove the car is mine?

A reputable provider will ask for ID that matches the registration or other proof that you own or are authorized to use the car.
